“We have the Old Sparky which is the highest expression of the Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard, and as we got into the Beckstoffer LPV, we also saw barrel lots from sections that really just popped forward, that had a luster and a charm that we felt needed to be bottled on its own. And that brought us the Schrader Colesworthy.” — Carol Schrader

Elegant and reserved, the 2019 Colesworthy weaves together an opulent mix of black cherries, bramble, and currants with provocative herb scents and savory, espresso, crushed rock, and sweet earth.

Taking a page from our historic Schrader Old Sparky program, the 2018 Schrader Colesworthy represents our finest, most compelling barrels of the vintage from the Beckstoffer Las Piedras Vineyard. Intense and wildly aromatic, the 2018 vintage mesmerizes with lavish fragrances of cassis, blackberries, and sweet vanilla interlaced with very interesting threads of graphite and shale minerality. This sexy wine delivers an intensely pleasurable, plush mouthfeel with soft, supple tannins that weave through the substantial fruit core, culminating in a long and vibrant finish.

98 Pts. “A tour de force from this team, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Las Piedras Vineyard Colesworthy is a barrel selection from this site and I believe it’s brought up all in new Darnajou barrels. It’s a quintessential 2018 with its more reserved, elegant, yet incredibly concentrated style, and like its sibling, it has a beautiful, savory style that includes a wealth of red and black fruits as well as espresso, tobacco leaf, cedar pencil, and dried flowers. It’s actually more reserved and backward than the straight single vineyard release and is full-bodied and flawlessly balanced, with massive tannins, integrated acidity, and a great, great finish. Like a lot of top 2018s from Napa, there’s a more Bordeaux’esque quality to this wine. The tannins are firm and present, there’s plenty of edge and cut, and it delivers a beautiful sense of weightlessness on the palate. Forget bottles for 5-7 years and enjoy over the following 25-30 years.”

  • Vineyard

The Las Piedras Vineyard, a name that translates to “the stones” in Spanish, is an exceptional rolling estate in North East St. Helena district that carries a rich viticultural history dating back to its founding by Edward Bale in the 1840s. An exceptional terroir makes this vineyard unique, where the vines contour to the gentle slope and live in rocky soil that creates a perfectly stressed environment ideal for Cabernet Sauvignon. The result is fruit that is remarkably dense and wonderfully concentrated, abundant with a provocative and elegant minerality, and bursting with deep, lush black and blue fruit flavors complemented by magnificent structure.

After a wet and cool winter, both bud break and flowering got off to a later-than-normal start. Summer brought nice, even temperatures with very few heat spikes, resulting in great phenolic development in the grapes and even ripening across all our vineyard sites. Due to the lower-than-normal summer temperatures, the grapes enjoyed long, steady ripening. This allowed for wonderful sugar development while maintaining structure. Once in barrel, the wines showed prodigious depth and incredible character that wonderfully displayed the benefits of slow, even ripening. A winemaker’s dream, the 2018 vintage has produced wines that will provide exceptional pleasure upon release and age gracefully in your cellar.
