2019 Colesworthy

Our 2019 Beckstoffer Las Piedras Colesworthy 1.5L will be shipped in a Schrader Cellars wooden box.

“We have the Old Sparky which is the highest expression of the Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard, and as we got into the Beckstoffer LPV, we also saw barrel lots from sections that really just popped forward, that had a luster and a charm that we felt needed to be bottled on its own. And that brought us the Schrader Colesworthy.” — Carol Schrader

  • Tasting Notes

Since our first harvest at the Beckstoffer Las Piedras Vineyard, we have been compelled to a handful of barrel lots from a prime block on the site. These wines possess prodigious fruit character and great natural power, ideally suited to the framework of our Schrader Colesworthy Cabernet Sauvignon, our highest expression from this historic estate. Elegant and reserved, the 2019 vintage weaves together an opulent mix of red and black fruits, blackberries, black cherries, and currants with provocative herb scents and savory, espresso, pencil shavings, crushed rock, and sweet earth. The lush, broad range of flavors sweep through the multi-layered profile and match perfectly with the grippy tannins, firm structure, and vibrant acidity. Made from 100% clone 337 grapes, this monumental, intense wine delivers an eminently pleasurable and memorable Cabernet experience.

  • Accolades

99 Pts. “Almost pure perfection in a glass, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Las Piedras Vineyard comes from a more rocky vineyard located on the west side of St. Helena. Black fruits, savory herbs, flowers, and crushed rock notes give way to a full-bodied, flawlessly balanced, seamless 2019. It has the ripe yet elegant style of the vintage (as well as the vineyard), ultra-fine tannins, no hard edges, and a gorgeous finish.”

98 Pts. “The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Las Piedras Vineyard Colesworthy is a barrel selection. All Clone 337, all new French oak, all Thomas Rivers Brown, it's a full-bodied, concentrated effort, loaded with intense black cherries and cassis and with a subtle touch of cigar wrapper for savory complexity. It's tannic, but those tannins are ripe and silky-dusty in texture, lingering for what seems like minutes on the long, mouthwatering finish.”

  • Vineyard

The Beckstoffer Las Piedras Vineyard, located in Northwest St. Helena, boasts a viticultural lineage of more than 150 years, dating back to the 1840s when it was planted by Edward Bale. The name translates from Spanish to “the stones,” which aptly describes the soil composition of the vineyard. The high concentration of rocks and pebbles allows for easy drainage and causes the roots of the vines to grow deep in search of water and nutrients. The gravelly terrain shows through in the wine, imparting an elegant minerality that sings its way through a dense structure of lush black and blue fruit, a signature of this distinctive estate.

  • Vintage

A cool vintage overall, the picking windows for 2019 were very long, which gave us the luxury of harvesting each different vineyard block at the perfect level of ripeness. The moment we pressed the grapes, we knew this wine was heading toward greatness. It’s exhibiting remarkable freshness that perfectly balances its flavor concentration and compares to the exceptional 2001/2002 vintages for tannins and acidity. Wonderfully enjoyable at release but will also be an ideal addition to your cellar for many years to come.
